Local guide
Permits, the coast, and the pitch
Carlsbad publishes examples of work that generally needs a building permit, including decks or patios and additions.
This is an independent referral guide. It connects homeowners with independent providers and may receive compensation. It is not a licensed contractor and it does not do the work.
A structure is not the same as flat pavers
The city's building permit page lists decks or patios among work that generally triggers a permit. A raised patio, a cover, or a retained edge is in that family. A paver field on grade may be a different conversation, especially if it changes drainage.
Do not treat this paragraph as the approval. Ask the Building Division with the actual sketch.
Coastal zone
Only part of Carlsbad is in the coastal zone. Village and bluff parcels are the ones to check first. La Costa is not automatically the same review.
Check the license of anyone you hire on the state board site. This guide does not certify anyone.
